Have you ever thought about having a conversation with one of your ancestors?
Yesterday I saw an exhibition of the Painters Eleven group of abstract artists from the mid-1900s who banded together to try to make a statement about abstract expressionism in Canada. Amazing to see the work of all those artists…wild to see how raw some of it was, with wooden frames, irregularly painted sides of the canvases. And the prices from $950 to $300,000!
I do notice some similarities between my work
(Transitions #14 6×6, acrylic on canvas)
and some of these artists’ work…
(Harold Town,1959, 10×10, oil on canvas)
(Oscar Cahen, Traumoeba, oil on canvas)
What do you think? Am I having a visual conversation with them?
