I happened upon a movie this week which captures my struggle as a mother-artist. It’s about the ongoing time and energy dilemna surrounding the importance of being there for our children and yet needing to time to create, to make space for our art. The documentary tells the stories of several female artists who try to make time however they can for their art while still fulfilling society’s expectations of motherhood. Life involves a great deal of juggling, negotiation, compromise, however what rings true for me is the inspiration, the joy, the fascination, and the exhiliration that I feel as my art feeds my life and my life fuels my art. I am so lucky to live this life, to find such beauty in the little and not so little happenings, coincidences, and to be able to express myself with paint and pencil…whenever I have the time!
